For the art project Barokke Barakker in Nyboder, we crafted the handmade sailor’s chests that serve as central elements in Oscar Yran’s installation. The design draws inspiration from the historical sea chests once used by Nyboder’s sailors to store their few personal belongings — private spaces within a shared life. Each chest was built with deep respect for traditional craftsmanship, where proportions, joinery, and materials create a tangible link between past and present. The result is a series of robust, functional pieces that carry both history and purpose, showing how fine carpentry can preserve cultural heritage while speaking to a contemporary context.
